Thom Vollenweider Thom Vollenweider has been in the photography business for 45 years working for several publications such as Sports Illustrated, LA Times and the San Diego Union. But before being a professional photographer he 6 years a photographer in the U.S. Navy, also at 25 Thom was hired as a Staff Photographer/Picture Editor for United Press International in Europe, where he honed his skills covering several news events such as the European Soccer Championships, Belgium Grand Prix, NATO/Common Market meetings in Brussels, Belgium and the Spanish King and Queen’s visit to Luxembourg. After returning to America where he turned in his portfolios to publications like Time and Life in New York. Some of the most popular people he has photographed is Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel,
Presidents Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Smokey Robinson, Berry Gordy, singer/songwriters Tom Petty, Graham Nash, Jewel, Willie Nelson and Art Garfunkel. Athletes he has photographed English Channel swimmer Florence Chadwick, boxer Terry Norris, Lance Alworth, Don Coryell and Jerry Rice.He also has worked as the personal photographer for legendary boxer Archie Moore, baseball legend Ted Williams and football great Junior Seau. Which means he's covered the world most spectacular events such as the Super Bowl !I chose these as my top five photos because not only do they show you something special, they can almost tell you a story behind it. For example the Junior Seau portrait shows you the life of a football player with the helmet on but it deeper than that. I also love how his portraits are almost dark but detailed enough to have some great texture to the photos.
